Great 15" laptop -
To get to the point, there are comparable 15" laptops that arguably do the 15" size better, for example the Razer Blade 15 (I own a GTX 1070/144hz model). If you want the best in portability (smallest size in class), that's the Blade. However the x15 is still very comparable, it is a little larger with the added fan space attached on the back (though extra cooling is definitely better, keeping components cool & performing at its best), including its first ever 4-fan system underneath, & plenty of vents all around (sides, back, bottom, around keyboard).
Now onto why you would get this laptop namely - the design is beautiful. A cool greyish-white outer shell, with a black interior when opened up. I love this design, it looks like a Blade on the inside (black looks better on the inside being less distracting, while also allowing its lighting to pop out more in contrast to the black). You can customize or turn off the lighting if you please of course, but it looks great here inside & out. The outer lighting ring, going around its back "honeycomb" fan exhaust looks amazing, & gets surprisingly bright! What sets it apart from other laptops is this whole unique design - it looks incredibly modern, almost other-worldly, hence in-tune with its brand name, an Alienware. It is my first Alienware PC, & I do really appreciate its aesthetics, coming from a Razer Blade. However it isn't all about aesthetics, it has to perform as good as it looks too, enthusiasts would agree.
So onto performance, it does great at its 15" size, however we are talking for a 15". It is a little larger than a Blade, yet compromises still had to be made to keep it a thin gaming laptop, much like Razer - however they're the best in most-portable gaming laptop. That's where the slight disappointment comes in, you'd wish they'd made it even just millimeters thicker, if it meant less compromise & a distinctively more powerful 15" laptop. Maybe then even the top-end 15" in performance, with its impressive cooling architecture. This is Alienwares 1st iteration of the x-series (x15 & x17), & this years R2 is out now - an already worthy upgrade to the x15 - less compromise in the same form factor, closer to the performance of an x17 (however being a larger 17", the x17 allows for better performance).
That new line will be more costly though naturally, so picking up the x15 R1 at discount was worth it ($500 off new, lesser on open-box). Which leads me to my conclusion, it was definitely worth it at lesser price, & as much as I loved this 15" laptop, I decided my Blade can still fill that need in the 15" form factor, so I went all-out on the x17. It was also on sale, although not as much savings, it is the superior x-series Alienware. Of course because it is larger, no compromises, better performance, & a 17" screen is objectively better/easier to use. If you have the means, the x17 is worth the price of admission as it is better in almost every way (more ports, bigger screen, better performance, same design) other than being less portable - larger/heavier. Unless portability is you're utmost priority, the x17 is the clear choice; but that doesn't take away much from the x15, as it is a smaller, lighter, beautifully designed 15" gaming laptop.
